Snowdon Horseshoe from Mountain Escapes
As soon as you catch sight of the Snowdon there can be no doubt about its status as the highest peak in Wales. Majestic and refined, the impressive proportions of its pyramidal lines are instantly recognisable. Often described as having 5 ridges and 5 cwms in a star like symmetry, this description is apt – but only tells half the story.
The ridges have numerous spurs and crags, while the corries are twisted and multi-levelled. The Snowdon horseshoe covers an area greater than that of the Glyders, and almost the size of the entire Carneddau range.Snowdon’s crags and ridges are intertwined with the history of Welsh mountaineering. From the early days of climbing on Y Lliwedd’s north face to the modern routes on Clogwyn Du’r Arddu, and from the highway like Llanberis Path to the secretive scramble of the Clogwyn y Person Arete, it is a mountain that provides adventure for all who step onto it. But one route above all others tops every wish list – and that’s the Snowdon Horseshoe.
Have you done any scrambling? Want to go just that little bit further? This is the walk for you. Take on the mighty Crib Goch and the Snowdon Horseshoe. Probably the finest ridge walk that the UK has to offer. Please only come if you are not afraid of heights and exposure, this is not for the feint hearted. Crib Goch is a knife edged ridge with long drops to either side.
